Our unique bond with our four-legged family members

I have always been a dog lover and passionate about art. Being able to connect with people and their pets by drawing pet portraits is a dream. My husband and I were lucky enough to have Vesper, our Miniature Schnauzer, in our lives for 8 years. It's impossible to describe the unique bond each of us has with our pet. Vesper and I had our own language, our own looks and phrases and ways of interacting that she and I understood. She gave me so much love, comfort, joy and inspiration and I will be forever grateful for her.
It was Vesper that inspired me to start my art journey. As a puppy, she was so cute, funny and entertaining that I started doodling to capture her antics. I then decided I wanted to try and capture her in a portrait and after exploring watercolours and pastels, I settled on coloured pencil as my favoured medium. Coloured pencils allow you to capture fine detail with precision and I was immediately drawn to the slow and delicate process. Vesper was always on alert, inquisitive, and looking for a cuddle and a biscuit. She loved watching people. I hope this portrait portrays that.
I'm so glad I have this picture to look at every day; although it was difficult in the initial days after her passing, I now walk past it and smile because it reminds me of her outgoing and vibrant personality and my love for her. My hope is that the portraits I create for my clients evoke this same reaction in them; a sweet memory and celebration of a cherished and forever loved family member.
