Frequently Asked Questions
Commissioning a pet portrait is an exciting and personal experience, and it’s natural to have questions along the way. Below you’ll find answers to some of the most common queries about the process, from choosing photos to delivery of your finished artwork. If you can’t find the information you’re looking for, please don’t hesitate to get in touch—I’m always happy to help.
Photos & Reference Material
What if I only have phone photos?
That’s absolutely fine—many of the portraits I create are based on photos taken on a phone. Modern phone cameras can produce excellent images. The most important thing is that the photo is clear, well-lit and shows your pet’s features and expression. If you’re unsure whether your photo will work, you’re very welcome to send it to me and I’ll be happy to advise.
What makes a good reference photo?
A good reference photo is clear, close-up, in focus, and taken in good natural light. Ideally, your pet’s face and eyes should be visible, and the photo should capture their natural expression. I’m always happy to help you choose the best image, and in many cases we can work together to select from several options. You can read my short blog post about what makes a great reference photo here.
Can you work from multiple photos?
Yes, absolutely. In fact, working from multiple photos can be very helpful, especially if one image captures the expression you love and another shows colouring or markings more clearly. Combining details from different photos allows me to create a portrait that truly represents your pet.
What if my pet has passed away?
I understand how emotional it can be to commission a portrait after losing a beloved companion, and it is always an honour to create a memorial piece. I will work carefully and respectfully with the photos you have, and I’m happy to take the time to discuss any special details that you would like included.
The Commission Process
How does the commissioning process work?
The process usually begins with an initial conversation where we discuss your pet, your preferred photo, and the size and style of the portrait. Once the details are agreed, I will confirm availability and begin the artwork. I will keep you updated on progress, and when the portrait is complete, it will be carefully packaged and delivered to you. You can read about my full commissioning process in detail here.
Will I see progress updates?
Yes, you can request progress updates. I like to keep clients informed as their portrait develops. I will typically share updates at key stages of the process so you can follow along and feel confident about how the artwork is progressing.
Is it okay to ask questions?
Absolutely—questions are always welcome. Whether you are commissioning a portrait for the first time or have done so before, I am very happy to help and guide you through the process. There’s no such thing as a silly question.
Do you require a deposit to begin?
Yes, a non-refundable deposit of £50 is required to secure your booking and confirm your place in my schedule. The remaining balance is typically due once the portrait is completed and ready for delivery. Full details will always be provided before any work begins.
What happens after I contact you?
Once you get in touch, I will reply to discuss your ideas, review your photos, and answer any questions you may have. Ideally, we'll have a chat over the phone so we can talk through your commission and for me to learn more about your pet. We will agree on the details of the portrait, including size, style, and timing, before the commission is confirmed. From there, I will guide you through each step of the process.
Timing & Availability
How long does a portrait take?
The time required to complete a portrait can vary depending on the size, level of detail, and my current schedule. On average, I will spend between 30 and 50 hours on each portrait (depending on the size). I will always provide an estimated timeframe before beginning the work, and I’ll keep you informed if anything changes. If you need the portrait for a special occasion, please let me know and I will do my best to accommodate your deadline.
Do you have a waiting list?
At busy times of the year, particularly in the lead-up to holidays or special occasions, I may have a waiting list. I recommend getting in touch as early as possible if you have a specific date in mind.
Can you complete a portrait by a specific date?
Often, yes—especially if I have enough notice. If the portrait is intended as a gift or for a special event, please let me know the date when you first contact me. I will always be honest about whether the timeframe is achievable.
Artwork & Options
What sizes do you offer?
I offer a range of portrait sizes to suit different spaces and preferences. Details of available sizes are listed on my commissions page, and I’m always happy to help you choose the option that best suits your needs.
Can I choose the background colour or style?
Yes, you are very welcome to discuss background options. Some clients prefer a simple, neutral background, while others like a specific colour or setting. If you would like a full background scene in your portrait, please add 20% to the quoted price for your chosen portrait size. We can talk through the possibilities and decide what will best complement your pet.
Do you draw all types of animals?
Yes, I also draw equine and wildlife pieces. While many of my commissions feature dogs and cats, I am always happy to consider portraits of other animals. If you have a different type of pet in mind, please feel free to get in touch.
Can you include more than one pet in a portrait?
Yes, multiple pets can often be included in a single portrait. We can discuss layout, size, and composition to ensure that each pet is represented clearly and beautifully. If you would like a double portrait please add 20% to the quoted price for your chosen portrait size. If you would like more than two subjects in your portrait, I will provide a specific quote for your commission.
Do you offer framed portraits?
At present, I do not offer framing as part of my service. However, I am always happy to provide guidance on choosing a suitable frame once your portrait is complete, so you can select an option that best suits your home and personal style.
Pricing & Payment
How much does a portrait cost?
Pricing varies depending on the size of the portrait and the number of subjects included. A full price guide is available on my website here, and I am always happy to provide a personalised quote based on your specific request.
How do I pay for my portrait?
Payment details will be provided once your commission is confirmed. All payments are made via invoice with a secure payment link issued through my Wix website. I aim to make the process straightforward and convenient, and I will clearly explain the payment schedule before any work begins.
Delivery & Aftercare
How will my portrait be delivered?
Your finished portrait will be carefully packaged to ensure it arrives safely. Delivery options will be discussed in advance, and I will provide tracking details where applicable.
How should I care for my portrait once it arrives?
Your portrait should be kept in a dry environment and displayed away from direct sunlight to preserve its quality over time. I will provide simple care guidance with your artwork to help keep it looking its best.
