Blankets, Bowls, and Big Excitement: Our Puppy Prep Journey

We’re officially on countdown until our little Guide Dogs pup arrives! It’s amazing how many things there are to think about when preparing for a new four-legged family member. In my last blog, I shared a little about the enrolment and educational process of becoming a Guide Dogs Puppy Raiser volunteer. Now, as the big day gets closer, our focus is on making sure our home is safe and welcoming, and that we’ve got everything she needs to settle in happily.

Puppy-proofing means removing tempting chewables like cables, blocking off hazards, and setting up barriers to keep her safely in her designated areas. We’ve also created a cosy sleeping space with a new crate, a roomy pen, snuggly blankets, and some comforting toys – her very own safe haven to relax in. (Check out the pic below of her soon-to-be new friends!)

Since she won’t be fully vaccinated at first, we won’t be able to walk her in places where other dogs have been just yet. Instead, we’ve puppy-proofed the garden so we’re ready for plenty of playtime outside and to begin her early training. In the meantime, I’m busy diving into the Puppy Raiser guidance so I know what to expect in those all-important first few weeks. I’ve got a feeling sleep might be in short supply…but I honestly can’t wait!
