Ordering a custom pet portrait is an incredibly special way to celebrate your furry (or feathered!) friend. Whether you’re commemorating a beloved pet who’s passed or simply want a timeless keepsake, taking a few moments to plan ahead will make your portrait even more meaningful.
Here are five things to think about before ordering your custom pet portrait, so you’ll end up with a piece that truly captures your pet’s spirit.
1. Choose the Right Photo
Your portrait will only be as good as your reference photo!
Choose a clear, well-lit image that shows your pet’s unique features — especially their eyes, fur colour, and markings. Natural light works best, as it shows true colour and detail. Avoid blurry or filtered images.
Tip: Take photos at your pet’s eye level — it makes a big difference in realism.
I encourage my clients to send a few photos so I can get a feel for their pet’s personality and have multiple references to ensure I capture their likeness accurately. If you’re unsure which image works best, I’m always happy to help you choose!
2. Focus on Emotion and Expression
Realistic portraits are all about capturing emotion — not just appearance.
Think about what expression best represents your pet’s personality: their curious head tilt, joyful grin, or calm, loving gaze. The right expression brings your pet to life on the canvas and turns the artwork into something deeply personal. Before ordering, look through your favourite photos and ask yourself: Which one feels the most “them”?

3. Decide on the Size and Format
Consider where you’ll display your portrait.
A smaller size (like 8x10”) works beautifully for a desk, shelf, or gift, while larger pieces make stunning features in your home.
Portrait size affects the level of detail I can include. Larger portraits allow me to capture finer features — the tiny reflections and sparkle in your pet’s eyes, the finest texture of their fur, and delicate whiskers — but smaller portraits can beautifully reflect their personality and charm.
Choosing a size is all about what feels right for you and your space. I love focusing on the detail and I ensure I include as much detail as I can in every drawing.
4. Timing and Occasion
Are you ordering your portrait for a special occasion — such as a birthday, holiday, or memorial?
Custom artwork takes time, especially when every detail is drawn by hand. If you need your portrait by a certain date, get in touch early so I can make sure it’s ready in time. Many clients order months ahead for holiday gifts — it’s one of the most meaningful presents you can give.
5. Add a Personal Touch
The most memorable portraits tell a story. Think about any personal details you’d love to include — your pet’s favourite toy, collar, or even a meaningful setting like the garden they love to explore. These small touches make your portrait one-of-a-kind.
Final Thoughts
Ordering a custom pet portrait isn’t just about creating art — it’s about celebrating love, loyalty, and memories that last a lifetime. By considering these five things before ordering, you’ll ensure your portrait reflects your pet’s unique personality in the most beautiful, realistic way possible.
